Gerhard de Bruin a Pure sponsored athlete reports on the Mildlands race. “Ouch !!! If there is a race that took some out of me, then it definitely was this one. Although today Tuesday, I feel great I must say it was a different story on Sunday.
Sunday 7h20 we started the swim leg of 1.9k in the famous Midmar dam. As I expected it to be a very hot day, if definitely did not disappoint. I did not have a great swim but managed to get out of T1 quick. Cycling a slow 2h14 I really didn’t expect to be in super shape. Four laps was fun and I knew the run was going to hurt. Of the bike a got into a steady pace and the first 5km off-road made it very tough mentally to keep the pace steady. Focussing on uneven fields. Felt like cross-country. And we all know how tough that is. The two laps was also mentally challenging because you did not have too many opportunities to see who is onto you.
The second lap on the turnaround point PJ Delmond caught me. I knew he was very strong leading up to Ironman SA. 500m later I thought to myself, “ag” just let him catch me now and cruise home… 10meters later I had a 10 second chat to myself and picked up the pace. I hanged in there and stuck it out enough to walk/stroll to the last 40meters to the finish line. I finished the race in 3rd position. I am happy to keep my results on different distance consistent. Looking forward now for some time off before my next challenge and build up starts.
Good luck to all the Ironman athletes”.
